Frequently Asked Questions
When we have some they will go here, in the meantime some travel information hoarded over the last forty years, since the years of paper tickets..
Q: [Lost Baggage]
A: [Personal Observation - after my bag was lost (first time in 40
years of travelling)]
- Immediately report the loss to the airline desk or the lost property desk in arrivals. You need to describe the bag so, in these days of smartphones,
it’s good to have a picture so the lost property team can help you to accurately describe the bag.
- After my experience I take a photo of the packed case, it may not show everything,
but from it you should be able to build up a comprehensive list of what was in the packed bag.
- The last airline are the responsible airline. By responsible that means slightly less disinterested than any other airline you have flown on
(Tip the more changes the more likely a loss). Don’t expect much help from the airline, they will just wait for the bag to turn up.
- In spite of what friends may tell you, the airline usually aren’t responsible for getting you a new wardrobe.
It’s discressionary so don’t go kitting up with Armani suits.
- Insurance. Your travel insurance will give better coverage than the airline.
If you are in the US or a US carrier you can get upto about USD3,300 from the airline.
If not in the US it will be limited to USD$1,000 or USD300 depending on Brussels or Warsaw convention.
- The airline will mark down value 10% year on year from purchase date.
Q: [Essentials to carry]
A: [Personal Observation]
- Torch and whistle. I keep a small torch and whistle on a keyring that are with me all the time. Or on the bedside table at night.
- Wallet. I use a bellroy® travel wallet.
It’s a bit bigger than a conventional wallet but designed to fit a passport, boarding pass, credit cards and has a small pen for form filling.
Everything in one place so no need to search through multiple pockets or carry on bag. Unfortunately there is no coin holder.
- Wedge. I keep a small plastic wedge in my bag to use when I don’t trust the hotel door lock.
